Alongside the quite outstanding exhibition ‘Hinterland’ by textile artist Gladys Paulus shown at the Gallery recently, we commissioned a film by local award winning photographer and film maker Chris Chapman.

Before watching this beautifully crafted piece via the link below, take a moment to read the artist 's thoughts on the re-opening, making the film, and the experience of an exhibition under Lockdown.

"Almost three years had passed since Hinterland made its debut at Black Swan Arts in Frome, Somerset. I was tentative about showing such personal work again. Hinterland began with grief at the death of my father in 2015 and was a way for me to understand better who I had lost, and to come to terms with the silent trans-generational traumas in my family. I began to see that these traumas transcended the particulars of my Indo (Dutch-Indonesian) family.  The questions I was asking myself about my identity were universal in nature, inextricably linked to colonial histories and power relations of racism, slavery and patriarchy.

The film prompted reflection and coincided with other events.  A few days before filming started, I managed to trace and contact long lost family members in Indonesia. Together we are filling in the gaps of our knowledge. I am also exchanging letters with a fellow Indo artist in the Netherlands. These letters will form part of his exhibition "We shall disappear / Kami akan hilang", through which he is exploring the same issues of identity and post-colonialism as I am. I am excited about both, and the ongoing journey Hinterland is taking me on."
