We are very pleased to let you know that the flags will go up on the 25th May and come down on the 19th June. It’s been a bit of a ‘thing’ with various ailments within the team and Covid doing it’s bit, but by the time you read this, fingers crossed, most of the new flags will be finished and the new new poles, including the big ones, primed and ready to be dressed.

The disappointing bit …..we know that most people want the flags up All summer Long, but it just isn’t a good idea. We are now going to bore you with why.

150 flags take a lot of looking after. Strong sunlight bleaches out colour and weakens the fabric, wind stresses each seam and join. Each year we go through the flags and mend every one of them. It takes hours of work and it’s all done for love. The other thing is that if the flags are up for a long time they become an over-familiar backdrop. It is so much more of a delight to be surprised by these beautiful creations that appear then disappear, than to have them growing shabby with too much exposure, taking away our pride in the skill and individuality that makes our town’s flags so unique.
