Working with stitch and cloth and thread to create a beautiful personal wearable timepiece. For all skills levels.

Inspired by my time exploring the Dutch ‘Feestrok’ (translated as ‘magical skirt of reparation’)  A post WWII women’s movement created to bring communities, families and individuals together to make patchwork and stitched garments from the clothing and possessions of lost and loved ones, from memorable events and to symbolize creating a new future. This was at the centre of stitching themselves and communities back together.

When we spend time in contemplation, intention and in connection with our places and ancestors, When we gather our thoughts, memories and intentions together we can use the physical act of stitching and making to mend the invisible as well as visible and explore the ways in which we ‘pull ourselves’ back together. This could include memories of a loved one, Family stories past present and future, A personal experience and dreams. Creating an heirloom etc the possibilities are endless….

Join me to create your own ‘healing’ skirt or shirt. A 4 month winter journey of stitching past, present and future into being to emerge anew in the spring.

Using materials collected from meaningful clothing, artifacts, remnants, or simply new pieces that you love we will create a simple skirt or shirt. Some materials will be provided as well as a simple pattern (although please feel free to bring or make your own pattern)

For those wanting to make a garment from scratch some basic sewing skills are required.Or alternatively if you have no prior or limited sewing experience please bring a ready made skirt or shirt that you would like to use as a base for patching and stitching onto and embellishing.

The first session will be planning and design, looking at materials and techniques as well as explore some of the traditional practices of connecting with our ancestors and place and getting a sense of what is needed for our personal creative journeys of ‘healing’, remembering or connection. One key element is how we bring the past and present forward into the future.

The course will comprise of 4 half day in person tuition sessions (with the option to add another in another session if required) @GreenHill Arts Moretonhampstead.
