100 carnivals, 1 Community: An Exhibition

Green Hill Arts is delighted to present 100 Carnivals, 1 Community: An Exhibition – a vibrant celebration of Moretonhampstead Carnival as it marks its 100th event. Running from the 13th to the 30th of August, the exhibition honours the rich tradition of carnival in our town and the creativity it continues to inspire.

On display will be a colourful mix of carnival props and costumes from across the decades, alongside photographs capturing the joy and atmosphere of past celebrations. Also featured is The Carnival Freeze – a series of striking collages created by children from Moretonhampstead Primary School during last year’s Arts Award after-school sessions. These collaborative pieces were inspired by the bold colours of Matisse and the rhythms of traditional carnival music.

A special highlight of the exhibition is the official first display of our community Carnival Banner – a beautiful textile piece co-created by local residents through workshops led by artist Melinda Schwakhofer. These sessions, filled with shared stories and stitching, were generously funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

As we mark this milestone – the 100th Moretonhampstead Carnival – the exhibition reflects on the shared experiences that have shaped our community over the decades. We invite everyone to come and celebrate the tradition that brings us together year after year.

Admission is free, and all are welcome!
