Moretonhampstead Flag Festival returns from 27 June to 12 July, bringing around 130 handmade flags to streets, buildings and public spaces across the town.
Every flag has been created in community workshops using reclaimed materials, including old and discarded tents and fabric off-cuts.
The festival began in 2010 when local residents Andrea Foxwell and Veronica Gould secured funding through the Dartmoor National Park Sustainability Fund. Their vision was to create a project that celebrated Moretonhampstead, encouraged creativity, brought people together and demonstrated the value of reusing materials that might otherwise go to waste.
Over the years, the Flag Festival has become one of Moretonhampstead's most distinctive and much-loved events. Each winter, volunteers gather to repair existing flags and create new designs, ensuring the collection continues to grow while welcoming new participants into the project.
Now supported by Green Hill Arts and a dedicated team of volunteers, the festival remains a powerful example of collaboration, sustainability and artistic expression. The display showcases the imagination and skills of local people, turning the historic streets of Moretonhampstead into a unique public artwork.
Visitors are warmly invited to explore the town during the festival, enjoy the spectacle of the flags dancing in the summer breeze, and discover one of Moretonhampstead's most distinctive annual traditions.
